Course outline

What you’ll study

Introduction to image processing — the representation of an image, a basic image-processing system, its relationship to the human visual system and example fields of use. Digital image fundamentals — image formation in the eye, light and the electromagnetic spectrum, image sensing and acquisition, image sampling and quantization, and basic relationships between pixels. Image enhancement — gray-level transformations, histogram processing, equalization and matching, image negatives, log and power-law transformations, and the basics of spatial filtering, smoothing and homomorphic filtering. Image restoration — the degradation/restoration model, noise models and restoration by spatial filtering. Colour image processing — colour fundamentals and the RGB, CMY/CMYK and HSI colour models. Image compression — coding, inter-pixel and psychovisual redundancy, and image-compression models. Image segmentation — edge, line and point detection, boundary detection, thresholding and region-based segmentation.
