Course outline

What you’ll study

Introduction to embedded systems — embedded-system design specifications, embedded-system hardware and hardware/software co-design. The 8051/8052 family of micro-controllers; C programming for micro-controllers; I/O-port programming; timer/counter hardware and its device driver; the serial-communication interface and its device driver; and interrupt programming. The embedded-software development cycle and the integrated development environment; debugging techniques for embedded software and the role of cross-simulators. Real-world interfacing case studies — LCDs, sensors, stepper motors, keyboards and the PC; the design of device drivers for serial devices; the concept of finite state machines (a stop-watch, stepper-motor control through a PC); the remote control of systems using IR remotes; and simple multi-drop and wireless communication networks.
